J.D. Power and Associates is an industry-leading marketing and information service firm with decades of expertise evaluating consumer response to cars.
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson was named the most appealing small SUV in the firm’s latest Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. The study surveys vehicle owners across 77 categories including the sense of comfort and luxury they feel in the driver’s seat, how exciting and appealing the driving experience is, and how much power they feel when they put their foot on the gas pedal.
Tucson outperformed all other small SUVs and made an especially impressive showing in the vehicle fuel economy, seats, HVAC, storage, exterior, visibility, driving, interior and audio/comm./entertainment/navigation categories.
Scott Margason, director of product planning for Hyundai Motor America, said the attractive new Tucson is definitely deserving of accolades.
“We are thrilled with the recognition of Tucson in this year’s J.D. Power APEAL study,” Margarin said. “The new Tucson looks great, has two fuel efficient engines and a roomy interior that satisfies a wide range of SUV buyers. The team did a great job launching the all-new Tucson this year.”
Refined aesthetics and sporty contours create a striking, bold appearance that will turn heads. Stylistic flourishes like the Hyundai signature hexagonal-shaped grille dominating the front of the Tucson, the dynamic spoke design on the 19-inch alloy wheels, and the bevel-cut chrome exhaust tips and a standard rear spoiler underline the bold styling of this sporty SUV and give it a defiant but refined presence.
A 2.0-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder engine offers 164 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed automatic features SHIFTRONIC™ manual shifting mode that provides better fuel economy on the highway, with a combined fuel economy of roughly 26 mpg.
The steering feel has also been reengineered for more precise and rapid response. The tilt and telescopic adjustment options on the steering wheel itself accentuate the enhanced steering feel, but it’s the motor-driven power steering system and extensive application of rigid, lightweight aluminum that ultimately provide the Tucson’s responsive steering feedback and reduced friction.
And the Tucson has one of the quietest passenger cabins in its class. Larger engine mounts absorb more engine vibration and sound insulation has been applied to the inner fenders, underbody, instrument panels and other key locations to insulate against road noise. Even the aerodynamics of the 2016 Tucson have been reworked to minimize wind noise.
